Ja Nie Chcę Spać (Komeda) - #2 [03:01] Most of the music here is for what appears to be a musical entitled Sniadanie u Tiffaniego. Of 17 selections, 15 are dedicated to that work and feature Komeda's octet. Familiar figures are here, such as Michael Urbaniak on tenor, Tomasz Stanko on trumpet, Komeda playing piano and conducting, Zbigniew Namyslawski on alto, and new members who include legendary Polish jazz guitarist Janusz Sidorenko and Jerzy Lesiki on flute. This marked the first occasion for Komeda to work with an extended ensemble, and the (thankfully) left-in dialogue and false starts give the listener a picture of the process of composition, production, and execution of these pieces, which are more open despite their larger setting. Komeda had been listening to a lot of the latest American jazz at this time. Komeda's band was solid: With Stanko, himself, and Urbaniak in front, the group could have taken on virtually any American jazz ensemble and held its own. This score makes the play it was written for completely immaterial; as a concept piece played by a group of musicians who knew each others' strengths and weaknesses, it is full of emotion, warmth, depth, dimension, and bad-ass swinging. The two vocal tracks at the head and foot of the collection, featuring this band with Kalina Jedrusik on vocals, are nice, but are only included for the sake of comprehensive accuracy.
