Alongside Fritz Reiner, Georg Solti and Ferenc Fricsay, George Szell (1897-1970) is one of the great conductors of Hungarian origin who profoundly marked the 20th century. Jewish, he left Europe in 1939 for the United States, where he had a brilliant career. Szell directed the Cleveland Orchestra from 1946 until his death in 1970. On this tribute from Praga, he leads the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic in works by Mozart, Beethoven and Schubert.
