The Deep Unreal

From the resurrected Metalanguage label comes a new release; freshly recorded in December of 2017. Immediately after returning from his 12th deployment to Antarctica as a Scientific Diver, Henry Kaiser recorded this musical translation of 43 scientific dives installing an underwater remote sensing system under the ice near McMurdo Station. Kaiser has previously released 7 CDs of music inspired by his years working on and beneath the ice. The live electric guitar solos here are, perhaps, his favorite among that series of releases. Beautiful, mysterious, complex, and surprising - the guitar playing mirrors what it is like to enter the alien world below the ice. Kaiser received an Academy Award nomination for his production, cinematography and soundtrack work on Werner Herzog's ENCOUNTERS AT THE END OF THE WORLD, the documentary about people and science in the Antarctic. He knows from direct experience what he is playing about here. Kaiser s sub-surface explorations are fantastical, however much they are created in the mundane world. Each sonic incident has its counterpart below the ice, but not all of the guitarist's companions are his everyday scientific dive buddies. Imagine Conlon Nancarrow in a Day-Glo drysuit, Pete Cosey strapping on his midnight blue tanks, Robbie Basho with paisley fins, as Jerry Garcia gazes through a prismatic ice mask: Henry's ghostly companions, on a mission to go deep and unreal.
