Sombati is a world music band from Fort Worth, Texas. Our passion is bringing music from around the world to life. We are folk musicians in the true sense - that is, we make full use of the instruments and repertoire available to us. Today that is virtually unlimited, which explains our crazy quilt approach to music. We play both traditional tunes and original compositions in a variety of styles including Middle Eastern, Central & Western European, Celtic, Latin, klezmer, folk, cabaret, Americana, and surf. About Curiosities: Our second CD, Curiosities, finds us continuing our journey through the wonderful world of music. Featuring music from four continents, Curiosities runs the gamut from middle eastern, to Americana, to Celtic, to French film noir, to Latin, to psychedelia, and a few concoctions of our own. Curiosities indeed! About the musicians: Steve Mixon - a native of Houston, Steve is a veteran of the Santa Cruz California klezmer and belly dance scene. He is a founding member of the Keller Folk Music Society, a local music meet-up group of acoustic musicians who share songs in a friendly, supportive atmosphere. Steve is a killer instrumentalist, and has an astounding knowledge of eastern European and middle eastern music, in addition to traditional western folk and bluegrass music. He can be found frequently changing the strings on one of his many instruments while listening to one of his many 78 RPM records of Macedonian dance tunes in 17. His instruments include octave mandolin, mandolin, mandocello, accordion, bass, and guitar. Steve also once played an impromtu command performance of gypsy tunes for none other than the late, great, Dave Brubeck. Belinda Daughtry - another Texas native, Belinda hails from the once rural burg of Southlake, though the part of Southlake she grew up in is now occupied by the Disney Castle. Mansfield's answer to Naftule Brandwein (king of the klezmer clarinet), her other instruments include the hurdy gurdy (yes!), percussion, saxophone, and synthesizer. Belinda began her music education in the 5th grade, playing clarinet and alto saxophone throughout junior high and high school. Her other early performance experience includes the Six Flags Employees Band and the Dallas Tornado Soccer Band. She began belly dancing at the age of 16 and bought her first drum two years later. Her performance experience includes the Belly Dance Treasures Stage at Scarborough Faire and numerous haflas and stage shows. Belinda's musical education includes studying under instrumental and doumbek maestros such as Jamal Mohamed, Susu Pampanin and Issam Houshan. Garry Brunson - with an amazing collection of percussion instruments from all corners of the globe, Garry always has exactly the right instrument for whatever crazy thing we try next. He is a past member of Izibongo and a frequent performer with the David Gallegos band, among others in the area. Garry is also the inventor of the Brunson burner, the lesser known cousin of the Bunsen burner. Mary Brunson - an immigrant from the far-off land of Richardson, Mary is a stellar violinist who can sight read, sight transpose, and harmonize on the fly. She and her husband Garry perform frequently with a variety of local world music groups. A professional linguist, she also speaks, reads, writes and sings in about seventeen different languages. Eric Covington - a Fort Worth native, Eric's day job involves herding cats in the aerospace industry. This means he is very good at getting hair off your dry cleaning. He parlays these skills into building set lists and coordinating rehearsals. Eric also writes the occasional tune for the group. His main instrument is the recording studio, but he mainly plays guitar live. He also sings and plays bass, tuba, accordion, and hand percussion. In addition to performing with Sombati, Eric is a member of the electronic music collective known as Sooterkin.
