Layton has been writing and performing since the early '70s, playing and writing anything from folk to rock, punk to country, reggae to pop. Each style he performs with emotion and originality. 'If you play it like the original artist, they may as well go buy his album.' 'I hate being locked in to any particular style; a musician should be able to play what he feels. When I do covers, I do my own versions. In live shows, I do a reggae version of Paparazzi for example.and a bluesy version of Ticket to Ride' The Over You album is mostly original country and blues. Layton plays all the instruments except the drums on Abandon Hope Inn, which are played by Pam Elliott.
