Songs, like trees, are always reaching for light, however twisted or bent they appear on the surface. My wife says if I were only a little crazier, I could be an outsider artist. Behind every mad thought, however, is a terribly insistent sanity always threatening to crack some code or another. This CD could've been called "American Lit," owing to a song called "A Masterpiece of American Fiction." There is a spaghetti-Western-type song, "This Time With You," about two friends holed up in the mountains, waiting to be killed, like so many of us are in America. And because Americans are so in love with private property, there's a song called "Pease Let Me Trespass," about someone who likes other people's yards, kitchens and bedrooms. Like Goldilocks, but creepier. "Maybe a Love Song" might be a love song about lovers who have fallen out of practice. "On Some Days Everything Breaks Your Heart" is a song you can fit to any sad purpose."I'm Gonna Quit Avoiding the People I Love" speaks for itself, and, on my good days, for me as well. It's called 'Trespassing for Beginners' because every song seems to have some kind of trespassing going on in it. But it's the kind of trespassing that anyone can do -- you don't have to be a hardened criminal. In fact, the last song, 'Soft Spot,' is about softening up in every way possible.the opposite of being a hardened criminal. The players and singers on this record, including Mark Lerner, Eric Parker, John Burdick, Dean Jones, Elizabeth Steen, Janet Steen, and Nancy Howell, are incredible. You can't ask for anything more.
