Ensemble bio Duo Vitare Agnieszka Kotulska-Rahunen, cello Kimmo Rahunen, guitar Two talented young musicians formed this unique duo in 2005 in Weimar, Germany, during their studies in Hochschule für Musik F. Liszt. Since then they have performed regularly all over Europe. Duo Vitare is one of the most outstanding cello guitar duos in the world and is continually broadening the repertoire of the cello guitar duets by commissioning new works from distinguished contemporary composers like Dusan Bogdanovic, Ronald Pearl, Pertti Jalava, Juha Leinonen and Paula Ptach-Dembska. Duo has received frequently artistic grants from LUSES-Foundation, Madetoja-Foundation and Finnish Cultural Foundation among others. They are also founders and artistic directors of LUOMUS -Chamber Music Festival which takes place yearly in Central Finland. Since 2012 Duo Vitare has focussed on rediscovering forgotten original cello guitar duets from the 19th century. In 2013 they received an artistic grant from the Finnish Arts Promotion Center for the continuation of this project. As a result, in Autumn 2013, Duo Vitare recorded CD titled 'Canzonetta Italiana' in the legendary Witold Lutoslawski Concert Studio of Polish Radio. The new CD was released in April 2014. In 2015 Duo will record CD of Dusan Bogdanovic's music for guitar and cello. About the CD (Attributed to) Luigi Legnani (1790-1877) : Potpourri concertant pour Violoncello et Guitare Adam Darr (1811-1866): Fantasie ueber das Lied 'Ach! Ich bin Lebens muede!' Guillaume-Pierre-Antoine Gatayes (1774-1846) : Duo No. 2 pour Guitare et Violoncelle sur l'Air d'un Bouquet de Romarin (Attributed to) Luigi Legnani (1790-1877): Introduction et Variationes concertantes ' Canzonetta Italiana' In 2012 we heard about a newly found collection of original duos for cello and guitar dating from around 1850. The manuscripts of three original pieces was found in a private collection in Austria. The editor of the scores, guitarist Stefan Hackl, writes in the introduction to the Potpourri concertant : "I found this piece in a manuscript dating from 1850 which contained three pieces for guitar and violoncello: one Potpourri and two set of variations. The Potpourri concertant and the variations on a theme from Weber's Freischütz have no indication about the author or the copyist, the variations on an Italian canzonetta are attributed to "Merz". This might be J.K. Mertz, but it does not really match his style. There are only few composers and guitarists from the 19th century capable of writing in this distinguished way. The beginning of the Potpourri suggests Legnani - No. 9 of his caprices from op. 20. The rest also sound like Legnani, in his virtuoso and operatic idiom." As a cello guitar duo we have we have so far concentrated on 20th century music, because we always thought that there are just few odd original 19th century compositions for cello and guitar, like Serenades by Leonard de Call, a Divertimento by Bernard Romberg or Potpourri by J.J.F. Dotzauer. After we played first time in 2012 these "Legnani" pieces we got so inspired that we spend last two years searching other forgotten 19th century pieces for this unique duo. This CD is conclusion of our explore and we are quite sure that it won't be the last one. There might be a plenty of wonderful music to be still discovered. © Kimmo Rahunen, 2014.
