A spirited offering by Eastern North Carolina's veteran Bluegrass band. The Tar River Boys are from all up and down the Tar River in Eastern North Carolina. They've been making Bluegrass for all occasions since the early 1970s when they first formed as an opening act for Bill Monroe at East Carolina University. They've played for Presidents ( George Bush), The Chair of the Joint Chief of Staff of the US Military ( General Hugh Shelton) and at all sorts of restaurants, private parties, bars, and pig pickins.' This CD highlights the group's eclectic interests and shows the band's ability to perform different styles of music with their own unique touch. There is something here that will appeal to everyone's taste. The album features standard Bluegrass favorites, including 'Your Love is Like a Flower,' 'Who Will Sing For Me,' and 'Blue Ridge Cabin Home.' The compelling and little-known Bill Monroe instrumental 'Delbert's Breakdown' is included with traditional instrumentals 'The Cherokee Shuffle' and 'Whiskey Before Breakfast.' Original songs include the humorous 'Be Bad Boogie,' by Canadian Banjoist Ian Patton and a ballad about Filo Farnsworth, the inventor of the television. "Filo Farnsworth" was written by Roger Sauerborn, the group's mandolinist. "All of Me," made famous by Willie Nelson, shows the band's ability to play swing music and the group also offers it's own approach to Jerry Jeff Walker's classic 'Mr. Bojangles.' A bit of country blues is thrown in with the Delmore Brothers classic "Blues Stay Away from Me.' Add to this mix the group's version of North Carolina native Elizabeth Cotton's 'Freight Train.' and you have a compilation that will appeal to anyone who likes acoustic, down-home music.
