The SMSB formed in 2012 on a whim, as a one-gig cover band designed to entertain a group of fiction writers and poets. They soon discovered a shared set of influences and interests, wrote a bunch of songs, and chose a name from their signature tune, 'The Starry Mountain Sweetheart Band.' Frontmen and principal songwriters J. Robert Lennon (guitars, keyboards, vocals) and Adam Price (bass, vocals) are supported by singer Elizabeth Watkins Price; lead guitarist and sometime-songwriter Lauren Schenkman also contributes vocals and keyboards. Drummer (and, yes, songwriter) Daniel Peña brings some jazz influence to the band's otherwise pop sensibility; the band's literary roots are clear in the songs' enigmatic narrative lines. The SMSB is influenced by Big Star, Fleetwood Mac, Tom Petty, and Neil Young, among others, but, with their trademark four-part harmonies, infectious melodic hooks, and sophisticated arrangements, they speak with their own inimitable voice.
