This double CD set is devoted to some of Beethoven's last piano music. The main works recorded here are his last five piano Sonatas Opp 101, 106, 109-111, the six Bagatelles Op 126, his very last work for piano and the brilliant Turkish March Variations Op 76. Of particular interest here is the piano used on these CDs. World renowned early piano specialist John Khouri, plays a beautiful Viennese grand piano made ca. 1828 by Joseph Bohm which has seven pedals and a six and a half octave range, a perfect fit for these works of Beethoven's last period of composition. One of the most exciting performances here is of the mighty 'Hammerklavier' Sonata Op 106, played close to the composer's daunting metronome marks. The other works on these CDs receive fresh and original performances helped by the unique sound of the period piano. Superb recording quality by audio engineer Don Ososke.
