On Dig the Stars, New Mexico's Gregg Daigle Band traverses roosty Americana closer to the Grateful Dead than the Stones. Lead cut "Constant Sorrow" finds some serious musicians taking a traditional tune for a ride with a haunting arrangement. Throughout the album Daigle tears it up on guitar in a laid back fashion, often not breaking a sweat before trading off to Greg Overman's sax. Another Daigle original "The Ghost of New Orleans" offers up a nice groove that flashes with brilliance. With the instrumental "Flextone" Daigle draws the curtain and reveals a bit of himself, never showing off but with understated chops to spare. Stars is a fine batch of rootsy tunes, but here Daigle digs in again with Overman, setting the Dead influence aside and strutting ala Little Feat or The Band. A rich cover of "I Wonder Where You Are Tonight" is a very cool song to end the album. Blaine Schultz MKE 09/2010.
