Released in Dec. Or 2012, this CD has only been heard by a few. In April of 2013 it was given a favorable rewiew by the Palm Beach Post's TGIF entertainment secition. In Jan of 2014, the TGIF critic made it one of the top ten new local CDs for 2013, in South Florida. Enjoy. Ralph Skinner was a Greatest Generation American who survived the Great Depression, WWII, and succeeded in providing for his family by putting on a tuxedo every night and providing music for the captians of business and industry in Palm Beach, New York, Newport, Boston, D.C., Houston, Chicago, Los Angles, Hong Kong, Tokyo, and once for Queen Elizabeth II. Ralph also wrote music but wasn't able to get around to producing and releasing his art for popular consumption. When Ralph passed in 2000, his son Ivan inherited his music. On his retirement from teaching school, he begins a project to have his father's music professionaly recorded an put onto a CD. The album 'Things Were Different Then' is the conclusion of that project. The eight songs on this album are a blend of fantasy and truth put to the most well crafted melodies you may ever hear. The first and title song tells about the time of politeness and good manners and is preformed by the same black tie orchestra that Ralph worked with. 'There's A Fella Comin' Round' is a straight up love song from the view of a strong woman who's waiting for the man who loves her to come and ask for her hand. This waltz will melt you heat. 'Moonburn' is about sex on the beach at night. This is a real swing tune that when it's over, will have you pushing the return arrow on the player to hear it again and again and again and . 'The Conch Chowder Man' is an islandy song about a local hero who pushes his cart through the streets of a harbor town selling pints of his soup creation, with a dozen singing children in tow. Vacation planning is the big risk of listening to this song. 'Get Off That Phone' is a slick jazzy piece about the high anxiety of a guy who's gotta call his girl, and the guy in the booth just won't get off the only phone in town. 'I've Got Money' is a no apologies thumb-in-your-eye from the view of one at the top of the food chain. What does he care that all those others don't have what he has. Money or no money, when we are in our last hour of life, we have to do our best to sit up straigh and hope that we can go out with some dignity. 'The Champion' is emotionaly cleansing and is the perfect metaphor for anyone's life. When 10th century English King Kanute's (Cnut) commanded the tide not to come in and the tide came in anyway, it was clear that the king was just an administrator. 'A Child's Reflections On Kanute' is a child's fantasy about a boy building a sand castle on the beach and thinking that he will not be subject to the same natural powers that exposed the king's limitations. Although there were weekend warriors performing some of the tracks, the music on this CD is not amateur hour mush. If you are having trouble with the one-note-songs, the midless and boring repitition, and the outright lack of creative lyrics and song writing craftsmanship that is much of today's popular music, then this LP is for you. This music will affectively clear out your head and heart. You have been warned. Although digital downloading may be the easiest way to get your music, it is no match for the richness and sound quality of a well recorded CD played on a fine home stero system. Get the hard copy in the jewel case, and you also get the whole story in the 22 page photo rich book that goes with it. Enjoy. Ivan Skinner.
