The star crime reporter at a sleazy Chicago tabloid prepares to file his final story for the paper before moving on to more dignified work, but his desperate editor will stop at nothing to keep him on board, not even blackmail or the kidnapping of his future mother-in-law! The film was nominated for several Oscars including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Director. A 1974 remake starred Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon.
