EDITORIAL REVIEWS
Straddling post-hard core genres, Orlando's Khann blend elements of melody and abrasion to capture a sound that is both unique and familiar. While most new music trends towards extremes or becomes a mish-mash of what's hot right now, Khann have thrown own a curveball by incorporating prevalent influence from the post-hardcore movement of the late 90's of bands like Small Brown Bike, Cave In & Hot Cross--an interesting about face from the sounds of the grindcore stylings of their 2007 debut, Tofutopia. The end result is refreshing albeit surprising for some. Less distorted, less screamy but much more distinct and very hard-hitting.
Their latest effort Erode has a calculated ebb and flow, rising and falling like the tide as the songs weave through various emotions. Ranging in intensity from subtle to chaotic, the album focuses on a theme of the erosion of self with the aura of the music mirroring the lyrical content. Like stone and sand being worn away to expose new layers and shores, similarly as the band has changed members and styles, new sounds, energy and opportunity have presented themselves, reviving the group and paving the way for more profound things.
Khann have an unabashed, frenetic vibe reminiscent of the un-bastardized roots of the screamo genre. At its softest, there are shades of These Arms are Snakes or Fugazi. Their tones could have easily worked in a rock album context. At their most intense, there are similarities to Mastodon or the cleaner moments of Converge, especially in the case of the wild drumming and unorthodox guitar riffs.
Masterfully produced by Chris Owens (Lords, Akimbo), Erode stands as a formidable reintroduction to an amazing and interesting band as they are quickly redeveloping on the most sincere grassroots level.
