Mit ihrem sechsten Werk schalten The Contrast um in den Breitwandmodus. Die Band hatte ihren Sound auf Tonträger schon immer mit alten Keyboards, Percussion und Spezialeffekten aufgemotzt, dennoch ist "God Of Malfunction" das bislang fetteste Album der Briten. Die stilistischen Einflüsse reichen von Folk, Rock n Roll und Country, über Surf, Psychedelic, 60s-Pop bis zu Jazz, Punk und Film-Noir-Sounds. Das Ganze verpackt in hinreißende Drei-Minuten-Songs. Auf "God Of Malfunction" kommen zu dem üblichen Instrumentarium aus Orgel und Rickenbacker noch Cello, Theremin, Mellotron, ein präpariertes E-Klavier und Eno-esque Ambient-Texturen dazu. Produziert hat die Platte Labelchef Little Steven van Zandt, der die Band seit ihren Anfängen nach Kräften unterstützt.
