Gilded Sorrow is a pivotal moment for THE OBSESSED from Maryland. Die Band ist einer der frühesten Anbieter von Black Sabbath beeinflusstem Doom Metal in den USA und setzte den Standard für den sogenannten Maryland Doom Sound. Vorgestellt vom legendären Mann Wino, der auch mit solchen Leuchten wie Spirit Caravan, The Hidden Hand, Place Of Skulls, Saint Vitus und Probot, David Grohls Metallprojekt gespielt hat. Diese Reise führte Wino zurück zu THE OBSESSED und zum fünften Studioalbum der Band, Gilded Sorrow. Dieses Doom Metal ist nicht nur in seiner reinsten Form, die Band hat das Genre nachgebildet. Alle Eigenschaften sind vorhanden, aber mit Wino an der Spitze entfesselt die Band eine Klangexplosion, die in Doom Metal nicht gehört wurde, bevor sie die Musik auf beispiellose Höhen hebt. Songs wie Jailine, Wellspring, It's Not OK und der Titeltrack sind brillante Beispiele für Winos Talente als Songwriter.
