With a rich warm sound and a range of over three octaves plus the cello is a unique and underexploited jazz instrument . Jazz styles on the album run the gamut between swing, Latin. Ballads, blues and waltz. The classical influence can be heard on songs like 'I Remember Johann Sebastian', which is based on the jazz standard "I Remember April". Using the harmonic structure of that song Marshall wrote an intro based on J.S. Bach's First Solo Cello Suite. The experimental side shines through in utilizing the sound of the metal end of a pencil played percussively on the cello strings - this discovery of yet another element of her cello's sound-palette led to the title track of the album, "Pencil Blues".
