The Smashing Pumpkins wurden 1988 in Chicago, Illinois, gegründet und veröffentlichten 1991 das Debütalbum Gish und fanden mit dem 4x Multi-Platin Siamese Dream von 1993 und dem 10x Multi-Platin ausgezeichnetem Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness (1995) großen Erfolg. Nach der Veröffentlichung von Adore, Machina/ The Machines of God, und Machina II/ The Friends & Enemies of Modern Music löste sich die ursprüngliche Besetzung im Jahr 2000 auf. Sänger/ Gitarrist Billy Corgan reformierte die Gruppe im Jahr 2005 und engagierte verschiedene Künstler für Zeitgeist, Teargarden by Kaleidyscope, Oceania, und Monuments to an Elegy. Im Juni 2018 veröffentlichte The Smashing Pumpkins Solara, der erste Song seit über 18 Jahren, in dem Corgan neben den Grünungsmitgliedern James Iha (Gitarre) und Jimmy Chamberlin (Schlagzeug) zu hören ist. Aufgenommen in Malibu, CA in den Shangri La Studios mit dem legendären Produzenten Rick Rubin und dem langjährigen The Smashing Pumpkins Gitarristen Jeff Schroeder, bietet der Track einen ersten Einblick in die kommende Musik des neu reformierten Line-ups.
