EDITORIAL REVIEWS
From Muiza Adnet: 'I had the distinct pleasure of meeting both Moacir Santos and his music more than five years ago during the time my brother, Mario Adnet, was co-producing the Ouro Negro/Moacir Santos project. As a guest vocalist on the project, my friendship and respect for his work blossomed.' This recording features appearances by Milton Nascimento, Ivan Lins, Mario Adnet, Ricardo Silveira and others.

At their worst, tribute albums seem to be excuses for lesser-known artists to cash in on the popularity of more famous ones. The best ones, on the other hand, throw some well-deserved light on an influential but under-appreciated artist (Moacir Santos was an important Brazilian arranger and composer). This one is in the latter category, even including several vocal appearances from the master himself, thus making it one of his last music appearances before passing in 2006. Produced by her brother Mario Adnet and featuring such Brazilian stars as Ivan Lins and Milton Nascimento, the album finds Muiza Adnet in great company. Nonetheless she shines as a singer, with a warm, slightly deep and raspy voice that is more down to earth than the airy soprano divas the country is famous for. Mario Adnet deserves credit as well, putting together arrangements that range from earthy folk tunes ("Ciranda") to jazz ("Lembre-Se") to straight up bossa nova ("Off And On"). This is an honorable idea that's well executed. --Tad Hendrickson
