This album of original compositons is unique for using carbon fiber hammer dulcimers on every track. Like some of Sam's other albums, his background as a biologist comes to the fore with many of the tune titles inspired by nature. Some are cheerful tunes with animal names. Others are lyrical in mood; some are written for musician friends. Since the 1960s Sam's innovations in instrument making and playing have helped to define the contemporary hammered dulcimer. His performances have been called 'resonantly sensual magic,' and 'awe inspiring.' Performance credits include The Kennedy Center and The National Cathedral, as well as TV and radio. Sam started the dulcimer music program at the Augusta Heritage Center and taught there for many years. In 1975 he formed the renowned hammer dulcimer quartet, TRAPEZOID. His many recordings include 15 CDs featuring hammer dulcimer, and there are four book collections of his original compositions. Sam has been nominated for a National Endowment for the Arts National Heritage Fellowship for lifetime achievement in the arts.
