Riccardo Chailly conducts the La Scala orchestra and chorus in this 1985 production of Umberto Giordano's 'Andrea Chénier', live from the Teatro alla Scala. Chénier (Jose Carreras) is a French revolutionary poet who pines for the beautiful Maddalena (Eva Marton). However, he has a jealous rival in the form of servant-turned-revolutionary Gérard, who sets about plotting Chénier's downfall.
