In choreographed episodes that combine dream, memory, foreboding, and reality, John Neumeier's ballet Tatiana brings to life the story of a young Russian girl and her first great love.
Faced with Pushkin's Eugene Onegin as a plot for his latest ballet, Neumeier was not content with a simple plot. Rather, he was interested in the complex developments of Tatiana's fate, the influence of her adolescent years, her experiences and her development into woman.
"When I read Pushkin's novel, I realized that I was fascinated by the role of Tatiana Larina. She became more contoured and interesting with every section, every page I had read. And so I had the idea to explore her role and perspective through my ballet," says Neumeier.
