DESCRIPTION
The ballet of the dancer and choreographer Jardi Tancat enjoy an internationally reputation of first quality. His career began in 1981 when Jiri Kylian won him as a dancer for the Nederlands Dans Theater and later choreographer. Jardi Tancat was Duato's first self-choreographed ballet, which he created in 1983 for the offspring group of the NDT. The work was ensured when it won the first prize in the choreographic competition in Cologne in 1984 and has since been served with great success by the Nederlands Dans Theatre. Jardi Tancat or The Closed Garden is based on the texts of centuries of old Catalan folk songs that have been toned and interpreted by Spanish singer Maria del Mar Bonnet. The songs tell about the misery of Spanish farmers working on the dry ground and waiting for rain that doesn't fall. Duato has created a ballet full of strength, poetry and beauty with Jardi Tancat: Three pairs proudly defy the scary environment by not accepting their defeat and continually sowing, planting, harvesting and thrashing. The work is full of dynamism and expression. In an introductory film, Nacho Duato speaks about his life, his work and his source of inspiration the Spanish landscape and culture of his homeland. The documentation shows Duato in the performance of Jardi Tancat as part of a Nederlands Dans Theatre Tour, working on his Ballet Dreams of Ether and in the NDT Studio at rehearsal of Jiri Kylians L Histoire du soldier, where he dances the main role.
