Georges Seurat has taken the painting to the point. The son of a wealthy Parisian family made modern life the subject of his images. Inspired by colour theories, he developed the painting method of pointtillism, in which individual splashes of colour are placed side by side on the canvas and mix into colours in the eye of the viewer. When the 31 year old died he left only a few large paintings, including 'A Sunday afternoon on the island of La Grande Jatte'. David Thompson, together with artists such as Henry Moore, examines the artistic and theoretical work of the man who founded neoimpressionism in modern painting.
