The British made his international breakthrough in the mid-60s with homoerotic shower scenes and Californian, sun-drenched pool landscapes. Even in later works, the artist showed himself as a sharp observer and passionate experimenter. Melvyn Bragg met the artist in 1988 at the Tate Gallery to the great Hockney retrospective. Hockney himself reveals backgrounds, intentions and small anecdotes about milestones of his career - an exhibition visit of a special kind.
