Birds of a Feather

A hugely influencial vocal quartet, The Ravens were the link between the preceding two most popular black vocal groups, The Mills Brothers and The Ink Spots, and the explosion of rhythm 'n' blues/doowop groups in the 1950s. In particular their leader and bass singer, Jimmy Ricks, was a great inspiration to a whole generation of aspiring bass vocalists. The group recorded successfully in a variety of styles, having hits with show tunes, Tin Pan Alley ballads, uptempo novelties, proto-R&B and even Christmas songs: their version of "White Christmas" was the blueprint for revivals by Clyde McPhatter & The Drifters and Elvis Presley. This 50 track double CD covers all styles, tracing the group's career from their first recordings in 1946, through their late '40s heyday, to 1952 when they were gradually being outflanked by the younger groups they'd inspired.
