The Legend:
Ray Charles was a hero to the black community, of such exalted status that no other popular entertainer - with the possible exception of Louis Armstrong - has ever achieved. Charles was the Bishop, the Right Reverend, The High Priest of Soul. Atlantic Records proclaimed him "the Genius", a title he has born for over fifty years.
As a singer Charles seduced the world with his voice, composer, bandleader, arranger, pianist, alto saxophonist, record producer and performer whose marriage of gospel and R & B helped prepare the basis for soul music, his prolific work deserves no other praise.
Frank Sinatra called him "the only true genius in the business." In 2004, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked Ray Charles No. 10 on their list of The Immortals: 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. Besides winning dozens of Grammy Awards in his career, Charles was also honored in many other ways. In 1981, he was given a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and was one of the first inductees to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame at its inaugural ceremony in 1986.
