Rick Martin (Sterling Hayden) kehrt nach langer Zeit in seine Heimatstadt zurück, um die Anwohner davor zu warnen, dass Tom Quentin (John Dehner) und seine Bande planen den Ort zu überfallen. Doch als Rick von dem jungen Revolverhelden Lem Sutter (Rod Taylor) herausgefordert wird und ihn aus Notwehr erschießt, wird er wegen Mordes inhaftiert. Kurz darauf erfolgt der Überfall von Quentin und seinen Männern. Da die Bewohner der Stadt keine Chance gegen sie haben, bitten sie Rick um Hilfe.
