The first thing most folks seem to notice about Jact is frontman Andy Frank's vocal style, a giddy combination of Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie, Oasis's Noel Gallagher, and the Verve's Richard Ashcroft. In other words, Frank reminds the casual listener of Mick Jagger. But the band Jact goes for a hard and dance-ready groove, at times sounding like a thermonuclear Kick-era INXS, but with much better lyrics. On the whole, their self-titled debut is upbeat, almost ridiculously so, given Frank's reputation as a crazy man and drummer C. J. Eiriksson's penchant for sounding like a drum machine. Tracks like "(Through With) Excuses" and "Your Head's On Wrong" are anthems dressed in hugeness, grooving raggedly through the streets of London with a song in the heart and liquor on the brain. Like a lot of Britpop, it's bombastic and pompous. A promising release. --Jason Josephes
