Sacred Harp and Shape Note Singing

Op deze cd komen twee muziekvormen samen waar ik nog nooit van gehoord had. Sacred Harp is een vorm van koorzang die in de zuidelijke staten van de VS ontstaan is en voortkomt uit de folk van Groot-BrittanniÙ. Daarmee is het een soort missing link tussen de Engelse folk en Amerikaanse roots. Sommige nummers klinken inderdaad alsof ze zo door de Watersons gezongen hadden kunnen worden, andere klinken veel meer gospelachtig. De muziek werd sterk geassocieerd met een bijzonder vorm van muzieknotatie, de shape notes, waarbij de noten per toonhoogte een andere vorm hebben. Deze notatie was erg geliefd in de 18e en 19e eeuw. Al met al een unieke verzameling, met opnames uit de periode 1922-1950. Met name de oudere opnames zijn niet altijd in topconditie, maar de sfeer maakt veel goed.
