Ray Charles was, naast Sam Cooke en Jackie Wilson, degene die verantwoordelijk was voor belangrijke ontwikkelingen in de soulmuziek in de jaren 50. Charles ontwikkelde een nieuwe vorm van zwarte popmuziek door de r&b te mengen met gospel, jazz en blues. Op deze dubbelaar staan verrassende vroege opnames uit de periode 1949-1952, met aanvankelijk een duidelijke invloed van de pianisten van de West Coast totdat hij zijn eigen r&b-stijl ontwikkelde en Atlantic in beeld kwam. Dit is voor het eerst dat al deze vroege opnames bij elkaar gebracht zijn.
