The film was originally meant as programming for the Disney television series, but when production costs mounted, Walt Disney decided to release it as a feature film. The film is based on the 1943 novel by Esther Forbes, who won a Pulitzer Prize that year for her book "Paul Revere And The World He Lived In." "Johnny Tremain" won a prestigious Newbery Medal the following year. Disney gave his youngest daughter, Sharon, a small role in the film so she could get into the Screen Actor's Guild and do commercials. Sharon can be seen during the mob scenes delivering her one-word line: "Yes."
