You won't find any party anthems or paeans to overstuffed cribs on this soundtrack: The documentary The Hip Hop Project follows a group of at-risk New York teenagers as they turn their lives into effective raps. Guiding them is Chris "Kazi" Rolle, who used to be homeless and now helps his young apprentices through the process of writing and recording tracks; his teachings provide interstitial relief between the kids' songs. The tracks' beats--handled mostly by producers Lord Relic, CaNNon, and Nas550, and often recorded at executive producer Bruce Willis's studio--are a lot stronger than what you might expect from such a project ("Throw It Up" and "Envy" in particular), but they don't overshadow the focal point: kids rediscovering hip-hop's essential mission of reporting from the streets. So what you get are real stories that often keep you on the edge, wondering what's going to happen next. Sure, things get a little earnest at times ("Revolution"), but then a track like Princess's heartwrenching "A Mother's Cry" appears; its punch-in-the-gut emotion should touch even the most jaded among us. --Elisabeth Vincentelli
