I am a self-taught harpist and music composer. These songs are peaceful, gentle, and meditative, and best listened to when you want to still your busy day and relax for a few moments. Trees are mentioned in a number of my songs; while more by accident than design, this makes me wonder about the significance of trees in our lives. There is nothing I enjoy more than a walk in the woods, as I watch the birds flutter from tree to tree, and I hear the leaves and twigs crunch under my feet. I believe each tree has a spirit, but of course they experience life quite differently than we do. I am sad when people view trees purely as commodities or objects, rather than as living spirits. I know that we depend on trees for many things. They provide us with food, shelter, warmth, paper, and even the clean, filtered air we breathe. I can only hope that we harvest the trees with care, and with the understanding of the sacrifice these gentle spirits are making for us. I realize even the harp I cherish so much is made from the wood of a once-living tree. For the future generations of humans and other living creatures, we need to be careful to replace the trees we harvest. When I walk though the forest, the peace, stillness, and beauty enchants me. When I listen closely, I hear the trees whisper in the breeze. I can only wonder what they are saying.
