Freda Swain studierte bereits als 14-Jährige am Royal College of Music Komposition bei Charles Villiers Standford, den sie ihr Leben lang bewunderte. Ihren Klavier-Professor Arthur Alexander heiratete sie mit 19 Jahren. Nur drei Jahre später unterrichtete sie selbst am RCM und feierte erste Erfolge mit ihren Kompositionen. Mit ihrem Mann bildete sie ein international erfolgreiches Klavierduo. Obwohl von ihr etwas 450 Werke erhalten sind, die größtenteils noch zu entdecken sind, ist sie vor allem als Förderin von Komponistinnen und Interpretinnen in Erinnerung geblieben. Der Schweizer Pianist Timon Altwegg ist ein Swain-Spezialist und legt nun eine erste Kammermusik-Einspielung vor.
