Jean-Michel Damase entstammte einer musikalischen Familie: Seine Mutter war die Harfenistin Micheline Kahn, die mit Fauré befreundet war und die Ravels Introduction et Allegro und Caplets Conte fantastique uraufgeführt hat. In diesem Umfeld machte der junge Damase sowohl am Klavier als auch bei ersten Kompositionsversuchen rasch Fortschritte. Die Schriftstellerin Colette, eine Freundin seiner Mutter, schrieb ihm Gedichte zur Vertonung. Sein Klavierspiel erregte die Aufmerksamkeit von Marguerite Long. Im Alter von zwölf Jahren studierte er Klavier bei Alfred Cortot. Mit 19 erhielt er den Kompositionspreis des Pariser Konservatoriums und im selben Jahr schon den international begehrten Prix de Rome.
