The French compositional school of the twentieth century was renowned, among other features, by the refinement in its handling of timbre and instrumentation. These traits emerge clearly from the works recorded in this Da Vinci Classics album, collecting trios for flute, harp, and cello. They also share other characters: their composers do not reject tonality entirely, favouring instead a reinterpretation of its principles in dialogue with modernity and modality. They also have in common a pronounced melodic and ironic vein. Works included in this programme are by Jacques Ibert (Deux Interludes, originally from incidental music), Andre Jolivet (Pastorales de NoÙl), Jean Franaix (Trio, 1971), Henri Martelli (Trio, 1976), and Jean-Michel Damase (Trio, 1946). Together, they represent a wide-ranging palette of styles, but also a rather homogeneous itinerary in twentieth-century French music.
