Tierkreis, meaning “Zodiac”, is a somewhat untypical work by Karlheinz Stockhausen (written in 1974/75). For each astronomic sign, he wrote a simple tune, built on a “central pitch”, and whose musical traits mirror some aspects of either the sign’s name, or of the qualities Stockhausen noticed in those born under those stars. Sergio Armaroli realizes a version of Tierkreis for a set of percussions played by himself with the technique of overdubbing, and interspersed with intermezzi played on the vibraphone. The result is a fascinating artwork, weaving nets between macrocosm and microcosm, heaven and man.
