What is known as “Gregorian” is a vast repertoire of plainchant whose earliest examples date back to the first millennium of Christianity, but which has continued to grow, to develop, to increase, until very recent times (the so-called Neo-Gregorian). Furthermore, plainchant tunes have been modified according to later taste and musical languages (some newer “Gregorian” works are much more tonal than modal), or to rhythmic needs, frequently dictated by the use of Gregorian tunes within more modern compositions (e.g. polyphony). This album offers a suggestive insight into some organ works based on plainchant tunes, including Duruflé’s Prélude, Adagio et Choral varié sur le Thème du “Veni Creator” op. 4, Naji Hakim’s Ave verum corpus (from his Esquisses Grégoriennes), Jean Langlais’ Trois Paraphrases Grégoriennes, and Lionel Rogg’s Variations sur le Pange lingua.
