If asked about “Sonatas and Partitas” for unaccompanied solo violin, the average music lover will certainly respond “Bach”. But even though Bach’s Sei solo are among the most impressive and noteworthy pieces of the whole violin literature, there were several other examples of works for violin with no accompaniment both before and especially after him. In Italy there was a numerically minimal, but artistically significant tradition under this viewpoint: a tradition whose zenith would be reached with Paganini’s Capricci. Yet, much earlier, some incredible works had been authored by Francesco Lecce, a violinist and composer from Naples. The collection recorded here is called precisely Sonate e Partite, just as Bach’s, and is made of single individual pieces of a very short duration. They bear witness to Lecce’s unique skill as both a violinist and a composer, and are definitely worth rediscovering.
