This album features Mozart’s original version for piano and string quartet of two of his most beloved Piano Concertos: KV 414 and 449. For Mozart, Piano Concertos were the instrumental parallel to operas, the musical genre he favoured above all others. In Piano Concertos, he employed compositional strategies drawn from the world of opera, creating verses, stanzas, characters, operatic forms and situations which we frequently find, at a later date, in his operatic output. By reducing the instrumentation of these Concertos to a small chamber ensemble, he therefore managed to bring the operatic scene within the context of chamber music, of a dialogue among soloists; the wonder of opera becomes wordless and enters the closed walls of a music room where friends enjoy the shared joy of playing together.
