2 step or not to 2 step, that is the question. Do you brush off UK garage like annoying aural dandruff or embrace it wholeheartedly, because, well, resistance is futile? True Steppers, of course, are reaping the rewards of early participation, due in part to their stunningly crisp production and the clever coupling of some well-placed, pop star vocals. Recruiting ex-Another Level's Dane Bowers on "Buggin Me" was a good move, so too the vocodered duet with Victoria Beckham that cemented their reputation and took the genre to mainstream heights. Sadly the press-whipped Brian Harvey (although perfect for the job) bleats out a lot of clichéd nonsense on the cheekily formulaic "True Step Tonight" and there are further bad ideas that hamper their cause. Stripped-back garage with a junglist bassline is all well and good but there's no excuse for the Shut Up And Dance-aping "Club For Clowns" ("If your name's not down, you're not coming in") or the sexist "ladyee"isms tripping up "Boooo!". Still, as a companion piece to Artful Dodger's It's All About The Stragglers this is a worthy, feel-good affair that will take some beating. --Paul Tierney
