In the course of a police raid upon a left-wing social center, scientist Berthold Hoffman (Bruno Ganz)-there to visit his estranged wife (Angela Winkler)-was shot in the head. As he struggles through a recovery that will never be complete and tries to piece together how his assault happened, both cops and radicals will try to make political hay out of his circumstances.
