Chickens by Buck Howdy With Bb

You expect a lot of things from a CD called Chickens: frivolity, loopiness, maybe some squawking. But what the Grammy-nominated artist Buck Howdy and his longtime sidekick BB provide on their poultry-themed disc is more like down-to-earth pleasantness. Standbys like "I'm My Own Grandpa" and "You Are My Sunshine" sit side by side with only slightly goofball numbers like "Yakety Yak" and the Howdy original "Woulda, Coulda, Shoulda." Where Chickens gets liftoff is in its great style; Western swing isn't a genre most of us would tune into on our own, but Buck & BB are skilled enough to render it accessible. Even without the barnyard antics (check out the title track and "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens"), Chickens would've been a rootin'-tootin' good time. --Tammy La Gorce
