Saxman Eric Marienthal has long been indebted to the spirit of Cannonball Adderley, taking cues from the late, great alto player's passion for combining jazz improvisation with down-to-earth, soul-funk grooves. On Walk Tall (I.E. Music), Marienthal makes the connection more explicit - the album is a fully realized tribute to his hero, with warm renditions of seven classic tunes as well as new, original songs inspired by Cannonball. Featured on JAZZIZ On Disc is a smoothed-out remake of Adderley's trademark hit, "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy."
