Ensemble SONGS & Sarah Maria Sun: Folk Songs

Folk Songs results from a meeting between the Franco-Argentine composer Oscar Strasnoy and the Swiss composer and trombonist Samuel Blaser who is considered as one of the most innovative instrumentalist of his generation in the domain of improvisation. The project is organized around one of the most iconic musical pieces of the twentieth century: Folksongs by the Italian composer Luciano Berio. Folksongs is a collection of popular songs adapted by the composer for mezzo-soprano and small ensemble in the mid 1960s. Following the steps of Berio, Samuel Blaser and Oscar Strasnoy have also founded their musical inspiration on the folk tradition. This return to the roots is present in all the creative process of Folk Songs. Oscar Strasnoy draws on the Canton of Grisons traditional music. As for Samuel Glaser, he finds his inspiration in the blues of the Mississippi Delta. Adding piano, trombone and electronics, Oscar Strasnoy and Samuel Glaser expand Berios original Folksongs group and propose two fifteen minute productions.
