Zoltán Kodálys spätere Jahre waren geprägt von einer Reihe von Chorwerken. In seinem frühen Schaffen stand die Kammermusik im Mittelpunkt und begründeten seinen Ruf, insbesondere mit den zwei Streichquartetten, der Cellosonate und den beiden Meisterwerken dieser Aufnahme. Das Duo für Violine und Cello, Op. 7 kombiniert klassische Form mit volkstümlichem Einfluss. Während die Sonate für Cello Solo, Op. 8 mit ihren erweiterten Harmonien und Klangfarben eines der größten Solocello-Werke seit Bachs Cellosuiten darstellt. György Ligeti setzte die ungarische Linie mit seiner Cellosonate fort. Sie stellt ein prägnantes, aber zentrales Werk in seiner kompositorischen Entwicklung dar.
