Giuseppe Verdis „Ernani“ – nach einem Stück von Victor Hugo – wurde schnell ein großer Erfolg und war bald seine belieb teste und am meisten aufgeführte Oper. So wurde sie ein Grundpfeiler seines stetig wachsenden Ruhms in der Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts. Erstaunlicherweise wird sie heute, im Vergleich zu anderen frühen Verdi-Opern, relativ selten gegeben. Es ist eine dramatische Geschichte über Rebellion und Liebe: Das gruselige Auftauchen des Mannes in der schwarzen Mas ke (typisch Victor Hugo!) und die dramatische Wendung, wenn die fröhliche Hochzeit sich zur Tragödie wandelt, machen das Werk auch heute noch zu einer von Verdis mitreißendsten Opern.
