Books on Fate is the words and music of San Francisco song writer Adam Dishart (and whoever he can hustle into supporting him). Dishart's first foray into song creation was as front-man for The Catholic Comb, who built a national cult following before disbanding in 2009. Dishart decided to take his unique brand of moody pop solo, under the moniker Books on Fate. Often whimsical, and always unabashedly romantic, there is a definite 80's and 90's pop influence in his songs. Upon first listen the songs seem at once new and yet familiar, like tracks in deleted scenes from a John Hughes classic-cinematic, sweeping and sentimental. Adam has played shows in Seattle, Portland, LA, and of course, his home town of San Francisco. Dishart plans to tour more extensively in support of 'Memory', his first full-length release. A follow up record is already being planned. Adam has sited as influence : Mark Kozelek, The Blue Nile, Nick Drake, Echo and the Bunnymen, Morrissey, The Pogues, Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Jonathan Richman, and The Smashing Pumpkins. Books on Fate's music has been compared to M83, The Airborne Toxic Event, The Psychedelic Furs, The Smiths, and Adorable. (But This listener humbly submits: he is better than these things) This entry was posted in KEXP, Song of the Day Podcast: By Jacob Webb Published: September 10, 2012 Every Monday through Friday, we deliver a different song as part our Song of the Day podcast subscription. This podcast features exclusive KEXP in-studio performances, unreleased songs, and recordings from independent artists that our DJs think you should hear. Today's selection, featured on the Morning Show with John Richards, is "Memory" by Books on Fate from the forthcoming 2012 EP Memory on Ephemerata. Formerly Books on Tape, the new solo moniker of San Francisco-based songwriter Adam Dishart (ex-The Catholic Comb), Books on Fate specializes in '80s-influenced tunes that echo the widescreen sentiment of the last M83 album in terms of scope and emotion. Dishart sporadically released songs across the past three years, all leading up to the release of Memory, his first EP that finds the musician arriving fully-formed. Today's featured song, the title and opening track on Memory, sets an emotive and resonating tone for the rest of the EP. Led by fading synths and a twinkling keyboard line, Dishart's wistful vocals and smooth delivery hammer the song's reflective tone home. Erupting in a chorus that recalls traces of The Cure and The Psychedelic Furs, Dishart steps back and let's the song wash him (and the listener) over with a flood of synths before returning to the beguiling clam that opens the song. Books on Fate will be playing a pair of shows in San Francisco around Memory's release, but there aren't any announced plans for further touring at the moment. Keep an eye on Dishart's Facebook and Bandcamp pages for any further updates.
