Neil Tennant explained away the mousy quietness of Bilingual's initial sales by suggesting would-be purchasers heard the single "Se A Vida E", clocked the album's title, and presumed the album was some kind of weird Latino import. And, in some ways, it is: a good half of the album is dominated by thousand-piece mariachi-band drumming and the kind of obliviously sunny out'n'proud stompers one would more readily expect from Enrique Iglesias' dad than the Pet Shop Boys. Of course, it all goes horribly wrong--or right, depending on how you like your Pets: no band has ever had a better grasp on the sadness at the heart of disco, and the best tracks on Bilingual, from "Red Letter Day" to "Discoteca", sound like a man in an incredibly expensive suit having a nervous breakdown on the dancefloor, yet not spilling his champagne as he boogies. You can take the boy out of Soho. --Caitlan Moran
